Germany uses a progressive income tax (Einkommensteuer) from 0% up to 45%, with a tax-free basic allowance (Grundfreibetrag). A solidarity surcharge and, for church members, church tax are added on top of the income tax. Our income tax calculator applies the 2026 brackets and allowances to estimate your liability.

Both are surcharges calculated on your assessed income tax, not on income directly. The solidarity surcharge (Solidaritätszuschlag) is 5.5% of income tax and now applies only above a high threshold. Church tax (Kirchensteuer) is 8% or 9% of income tax depending on the federal state, and only applies if you are a registered member of a tax-collecting church.

Germany's standard VAT (Mehrwertsteuer) rate is 19%, with a reduced 7% rate for food, books, public transport and certain other goods and services. The VAT calculator lets you compute VAT-inclusive and VAT-exclusive amounts at either rate.
