There are exactly 1,000 milliliters (mL) in 1 liter (L). For example, a 500 mL bottle is half a liter, and a 750 mL bottle is 0.75 liters.

1 US gallon = 3.78541 liters. Note that a UK (Imperial) gallon is different — 4.54609 liters, about 20% larger — so check which gallon a figure is using before converting.

A US gallon is 3.78541 liters while a UK (Imperial) gallon is 4.54609 liters — the UK gallon is about 1.2 times larger. The same split applies to fluid ounces, pints and cups, so always confirm which system a figure uses before converting.

Metric conversions (liters, milliliters) are exact by definition. US customary units (cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, fluid ounces) use the standard US customary values; the separate US legal cup/tablespoon/teaspoon used on nutrition labels are slightly different (240 mL, 15 mL, 5 mL) — see the reviewer note above.

A US cup is 236.588 mL (about 237 mL). A metric cup, used in many countries' recipes, is 250 mL instead — check which convention your recipe follows, since the ~6% difference can affect baking results.
