Understanding Your Results

Weighted Grade
Sum of (Grade × Weight) ÷ Sum of Weights. Each assignment's contribution is proportional to its weight.
Final Exam Needed
Target Grade = Current × (1 − Final%) + Exam × Final%. Solve for Exam. If the result is over 100%, the target is impossible.
Letter Grade Scale
A=90-100%, B=80-89%, C=70-79%, D=60-69%, F=Below 60%. This is the most common US scale.
GPA Conversion
A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0 on the standard 4.0 unweighted scale.

How Grade Calculations Work

Weighted Grades — Why Each Assignment Matters Differently

Not all assignments count equally toward your final grade. A midterm worth 30% of your grade is three times more important than a homework assignment worth 10%. The weighted average formula: multiply each grade by its weight (as a decimal), sum the results, and divide by the sum of weights if they don't total 100%. For example, scoring 70% on an assignment worth 40% hurts your grade much more than scoring 70% on one worth 5%. Focus your study effort where the weights are highest.

Working out the final exam score you need

A common grade question is: 'What do I need on my final?' The formula is: Target = Current × (1 − Final Weight) + Exam Score × Final Weight. Solving for Exam Score: (Target − Current × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight. If your current grade is 85%, the final is worth 20%, and you want a 90% overall: (90 − 85×0.80) ÷ 0.20 = (90 − 68) ÷ 0.20 = 22 ÷ 0.20 = 110. You would need 110% — impossible. This means you cannot reach a 90% given your current grade and final weight. The calculator flags impossible targets.

Letter Grades and GPA — What the Numbers Mean

The standard US letter grade scale: A = 90-100% (4.0 GPA), B = 80-89% (3.0), C = 70-79% (2.0), D = 60-69% (1.0), F = below 60% (0.0). Some schools use +/- modifiers: A- = 90-92% (3.7), B+ = 87-89% (3.3), B- = 80-82% (2.7), etc. The calculator uses the most common 90/80/70/60 thresholds without +/-. Check your course syllabus — grading scales can vary by institution and even by instructor.

Limitations

The calculator assumes weights are expressed as percentages of the total course grade. It does not handle points-based grading systems where assignments are out of different maximum point values (though you can convert percentages manually). For the final exam mode, it assumes the exam weight is accurate and that your current grade reflects all work completed so far. Always verify your syllabus for the exact grading breakdown, curve policies, and whether extra credit is available.

Common Grade Calculation Mistakes

Averaging grades as a simple mean instead of weighting them — treating a 40%-weighted final exam the same as a 10%-weighted quiz produces the wrong overall grade whenever weights are unequal. Confusing a grade's score with its weight — the score (0-100) and the weight (its share of the total grade, also 0-100 as a percentage) are different numbers entered in different fields; swapping them breaks the calculation. Forgetting that weights not yet completed are excluded from your 'current grade' — the weighted average only reflects graded work, so it isn't automatically your final grade. Not accounting for dropped grades or extra credit your syllabus specifies, which the raw scores alone won't capture. Setting an unrealistic target — if the grade needed on remaining work exceeds 100%, that target is mathematically impossible given your current standing.

Grade Needed on Final = (Target − Current × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight, where Current is your weighted average of completed work and Final Weight is the exam's share of the total grade (as a decimal). If this result exceeds 100%, the calculator caps it at 100% and the target is not achievable through the final exam alone.

Why the Same Scores Can Produce Different Grades

Identical individual scores can produce very different overall grades depending on how a course weights its components. A student scoring 90, 90, and 75 on homework, quizzes, and a final exam ends up with a lower overall grade in an exam-heavy course (say, 70% final weight) than in a balanced course (30% final weight), because the weak 75 counts for more in the first scenario. This is why checking your syllabus's exact weighting — not just your raw scores — is essential before predicting a final grade.
