What is GPA (Grade Point Average)?

GPA is a numerical representation of your academic performance. Each grade (A, B, C, etc.) has a point value. Your GPA is the average of all grade points weighted by credit hours, most often on a 4.0 scale, or a 5.0 scale where advanced courses earn bonus points. Scales vary by school and country.

How is GPA calculated?

GPA is calculated by multiplying each grade's point value by its credit hours, summing all results, then dividing by total credit hours. Example: (A:4.0×4 + B:3.0×3) ÷ 7 = 3.57 GPA. A 4-credit course has 4× the impact on your GPA compared to a 1-credit course.

What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Two different things share the word "weighted". Every GPA is credit-weighted: (4.0×4 + 4.0×4 + 2.0×1) ÷ 9 = 3.78, not the plain mean of 3.33. Separately, a "weighted GPA" gives advanced courses (AP, IB, Honors) bonus points, so an A can be worth 5.0. This calculator weights by credits and applies one grade table to every course; it does not add per-course AP/IB/Honors bonuses.

How do plus and minus grades affect GPA?

A- = 3.7 (not 4.0), B+ = 3.3 (not 3.0). These modifiers represent 0.3-point differences that compound across courses. For a 4-credit course, A- instead of A costs 1.2 points. Always include +/- when calculating for accurate results.

How GPA Works

What Is GPA and How Is It Calculated?

GPA converts your letter grades into a numeric scale and weights them by the credit hours of each course. The formula: GPA = Sum of (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Total Credit Hours. A 3-credit A (4.0 × 3 = 12 grade points) contributes more than a 1-credit A (4.0 × 1 = 4). This is why performing well in higher-credit courses has a proportionally larger impact on your GPA. The calculator handles all the multiplication and division — just enter your courses, grades, and credits.

4.0 Scale vs 5.0 Scale — When Each Applies

The 4.0 unweighted scale treats all courses equally regardless of difficulty. A=4.0, B=3.0, C=2.0, D=1.0, F=0.0. With +/- modifiers: A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B-=2.7, etc. The 5.0 weighted scale is used when schools award extra points for advanced courses: an A in an AP course might be worth 5.0 instead of 4.0. Not all schools use weighted GPA, and weighting policies vary. Check your school's handbook or transcript to confirm which scale applies.

Cumulative GPA — The Big Picture

Cumulative GPA includes every course you've taken across all semesters. It's calculated the same way as semester GPA but using all historical data. A single bad semester doesn't ruin a cumulative GPA if you have many credits of strong performance — the math of weighted averages means each new semester has less impact as total credits grow. For example, after 60 credits at a 3.5 GPA, earning a 4.0 in a 15-credit semester would raise your cumulative GPA to only about 3.6. The calculator's cumulative mode factors in your previous GPA and credits.

Limitations

GPA scales vary by institution. Some schools use A+ = 4.3 or 4.33, while others cap at 4.0 regardless of pluses. The calculator uses the most common US scale (A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, etc.). International grading systems (UK classifications, Indian percentages, IB 1-7 scale) require conversion before using this calculator. Always verify your school's specific scale in your handbook or with your registrar.

Common GPA Calculation Mistakes

Using a simple average instead of weighting by credit hours — averaging letter grades directly (ignoring credits) misrepresents your GPA whenever course credit loads differ; a 4-credit course should count four times as much as a 1-credit course. Forgetting plus/minus modifiers — treating A- as 4.0 instead of 3.7 introduces a 0.3-point-per-course error that compounds across a transcript. Averaging semester GPAs instead of recombining all courses — cumulative GPA is not the average of your semester GPAs; it must be recalculated from total grade points and total credits across all semesters, since semesters with more credits carry more weight. Including courses that don't count toward your official GPA (Pass/Fail, transfer credits, withdrawals) will produce a number that doesn't match your transcript.

Why Cumulative GPA Moves Slowly

Once you've accumulated many credits, a single strong semester has a smaller effect on your cumulative GPA than it would earlier in your academic career, because the new semester's grade points are averaged against a much larger existing total. For example, a student with 46 credits at a 3.45 cumulative GPA who earns a perfect 4.0 in a 16-credit semester moves their cumulative GPA to (3.45×46 + 4.0×16) ÷ 62 ≈ 3.64 — a meaningful gain, but well short of a 4.0. Raising a cumulative GPA significantly after many credits typically requires several strong semesters, not one.
