Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions to help you use this calculator confidently.

What is an exponent?

Tap to view the answer

An exponent tells how many times to multiply a number by itself. 2³ = 2 × 2 × 2 = 8. x⁰ = 1 (x ≠ 0). x⁻ⁿ = 1/xⁿ.

How do you calculate a square root?

Tap to view the answer

The square root of x is the number that, when multiplied by itself, equals x. √16 = 4 because 4² = 16. Square roots can also be written as x^(1/2).

Why is any number to the power of 0 equal to 1?

Tap to view the answer

Following the pattern xⁿ/xⁿ⁻¹ = x, dividing exponents of the same base one step further gives x¹/x¹ = x⁰ = 1. This holds for any non-zero base; 0⁰ is undefined.

Can I compute a negative exponent or root here?

Tap to view the answer

Yes. A negative exponent (x⁻ʸ) returns 1/xʸ. An even root (like square root) of a negative base is undefined in real numbers, so the calculator shows an error for those inputs rather than an incorrect result.

What's the difference between x² and 2x?

Tap to view the answer

x² (x squared) means x multiplied by itself: x × x. 2x means 2 multiplied by x. They're easy to confuse but give very different results — for x = 5, x² = 25 while 2x = 10.
