Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions to help you use this calculator confidently.

How do I calculate simple probability?

Tap to view the answer

Divide favorable outcomes by total possible outcomes: P = Favorable / Total. For rolling a 6 on a die: P = 1/6 ≈ 16.67%. All outcomes must be equally likely.

What's the difference between AND and OR probability?

Tap to view the answer

AND (multiplication rule): P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B), used for independent events. OR (addition rule): P(A or B) = P(A) + P(B), used for mutually exclusive events where both can't occur simultaneously.

What is conditional probability?

Tap to view the answer

Conditional probability P(A|B) = P(A and B) / P(B). It answers the question: 'Given that B has occurred, what is the probability of A?' For independent events, P(A|B) = P(A).

What is the complement rule in probability?

Tap to view the answer

The complement rule states P(not A) = 1 − P(A). If the probability of rain is 0.3 (30%), the probability it won't rain is 0.7 (70%). This simplifies calculations when it's easier to find the probability of something NOT happening.

Why must probability always be between 0 and 1?

Tap to view the answer

0 means an event is impossible and 1 means it's certain — every real event falls somewhere between. If your inputs produce a probability below 0 or above 1, it signals invalid inputs (e.g., more favorable outcomes than total outcomes), not a genuine result.
