Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions to help you use this calculator confidently.

What's the difference between Class B2, B1, and A Integrated Shield Plans?

Tap to view the answer

Class B2 = Co-insurance 10%, lower premiums, shared wards. Class B1 = Co-insurance 7%, moderate premiums, semi-private wards. Class A = Co-insurance 5%, premium costs, private wards. Higher classes offer better comfort and less out-of-pocket costs.

At what age does ISP insurance become very expensive?

Tap to view the answer

Insurance premiums increase significantly after age 45-50 due to higher medical risk. Age loading can add 5%+ annually, so locking in plans early helps with cost certainty.

What does MediShield Life cover on its own?

Tap to view the answer

MediShield Life is the compulsory national scheme covering all citizens and permanent residents for life, including pre-existing conditions. It is designed around subsidised Class B2 and C ward treatment, so large bills in private hospitals or higher ward classes leave substantial amounts uncovered without an Integrated Shield Plan.

Can I pay premiums with MediSave?

Tap to view the answer

MediSave can be used for MediShield Life premiums and for the MediShield Life-equivalent portion of an Integrated Shield Plan, up to withdrawal limits. The additional private insurer premium above that, and any rider, must be paid in cash — a cost that rises steeply with age.

What is a rider and why does it matter?

Tap to view the answer

A rider covers the deductible and co-insurance an Integrated Shield Plan leaves you to pay. Since 2018 new riders must leave at least 5% co-payment, so full-coverage riders sold before then are no longer available to new buyers. Without a rider, out-of-pocket costs on a large claim can still be significant.
