Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions to help you use this calculator confidently.

What is the GST rate in New Zealand?

Tap to view the answer

New Zealand's GST rate is 15%, and it has been unchanged since 1 October 2010, when it rose from 12.5%. The calculator defaults to 15% but lets you change the rate if you are checking a historical invoice.

How do I remove GST from a GST-inclusive price?

Tap to view the answer

Divide by 1.15, not by 0.85 — this is the single most common GST mistake. A $115 inclusive price is $100 excluding GST ($115 ÷ 1.15), and the GST portion is $15. Subtracting 15% instead would wrongly give $97.75.

When do I have to register for GST in New Zealand?

Tap to view the answer

Registration is compulsory once your turnover exceeds $60,000 in any 12-month period, or if you expect to pass that threshold. You can register voluntarily below it, which lets you claim GST on business expenses but obliges you to charge GST and file returns. Check current rules with Inland Revenue.

Which supplies are zero-rated or exempt from GST?

Tap to view the answer

Zero-rated supplies — including exported goods and services, and most going-concern land transactions between registered parties — are taxable at 0%, so you still claim GST on related costs. Exempt supplies, such as most financial services and residential rent, carry no GST and do not allow input claims. This calculator assumes a standard-rated supply.

Does the calculator handle GST returns or filing?

Tap to view the answer

No. It works out GST on a single amount so you can price, quote or check an invoice. It does not track GST collected against GST paid across a period, and it does not file anything with Inland Revenue.
