Step-by-step calculation

1. Work out the monthly amount going in
Your contribution, plus for KiwiSaver the employer contribution after ESCT and one-twelfth of the government contribution.
2. Grow the balance for one year
Compound the opening balance and the monthly contributions at the assumed return.
3. Take off the year's fees and PIE tax
The remainder becomes next year's opening balance and the closing figure in the year-by-year table.
4. Repeat to the end of the term
The last closing balance is the future value, so the headline and the table always agree.
5. Optionally deflate
Divide by cumulative inflation to express the result in today's dollars.

Limitations

A steady return is assumed. Real funds rise and fall, and the order of good and bad years changes the outcome when you are adding money.
Fees are charged once a year on the year-end balance. Providers usually deduct them monthly, which gives a slightly different figure.
PIE tax is settled annually here. Providers deduct it at different times, and a loss year can create a tax credit that is not modelled.
The KiwiSaver salary is inferred from your contribution and rate, and stays level for the whole term; pay rises, contribution holidays and the scheduled 4% minimum from April 2028 are not modelled.
The government contribution age limits (16 to 65) are not applied because this calculator does not ask your age.
Ordinary bank interest is taxed through resident withholding tax, not PIR.

How is investment income taxed in New Zealand?

Most managed funds are Portfolio Investment Entities taxed at your Prescribed Investor Rate, capped at 28% — lower than the top personal rate of 39%. Interest from bank deposits is taxed instead at your marginal rate via Resident Withholding Tax. This calculator projects gross returns and applies no tax.

Why does the projection assume a steady return?

A constant rate keeps the maths transparent, but real markets do not deliver an average every year — they deliver good years and bad ones. Two portfolios with identical average returns can end very differently depending on the order those returns arrive.

Do fees really matter that much?

Yes, and the calculator does not deduct them. Fees compound against you just as returns compound for you, so a difference of even half a percent a year becomes substantial over decades. Compare funds on returns after fees.

What happens if I stop contributing for a few years?

The balance keeps compounding on what is already invested, but you permanently lose the growth those missed contributions would have generated. Early contributions matter most, because they have the longest time to compound.

Does a higher return always mean a better choice?

No. Higher expected returns come with wider swings in value, including losses. The right level depends on when you need the money — a deposit needed in two years and a retirement thirty years away call for very different approaches.

Understanding Your Results

Future Value (after tax & fees)
The projected balance at the end of the term after every year's PIE tax and fund fees have come out. This is the headline figure when inflation adjustment is off.
Future Value (Inflation Adjusted)
The same balance expressed in today's dollars, so you can compare it with prices and incomes you recognise now.
Total Contributions
Your starting balance plus everything added over the term. For KiwiSaver this includes the employer contribution after ESCT and the government contribution.
Total Interest Earned (before tax/fees)
Growth before tax and fees are taken off. Subtract Total Tax and Total Fees from it to see what the fund actually kept for you.
Total Tax
PIE tax charged each year at your PIR on that year's return after fees. It comes out of the fund, so it also stops compounding.
Total Fees
Percentage and fixed fees deducted each year. Compare this line between two funds; it is usually the biggest controllable difference.
Employer Contribution (after ESCT)
What your employer's contribution adds each month once Employer Superannuation Contribution Tax is deducted. Shown only for KiwiSaver.

Investing Through New Zealand Funds: Tax, Fees and Contributions (2026)

Why a fund's result differs from a plain interest calculation

A managed fund or KiwiSaver balance loses two things every year that a bare compound interest formula ignores: PIE tax on the return and the fund's fees. Both come out of the balance, so the money removed also stops growing. This calculator deducts both each year, which is why its result is lower than a compound interest calculator's at the same return.

How PIE tax works

Most KiwiSaver schemes and managed funds are Portfolio Investment Entities. They tax your share of the fund's income at your Prescribed Investor Rate of 10.5%, 17.5% or 28%, set by your taxable and PIE income in the previous two tax years. If your provider holds a rate that is too low you may owe tax at year end; too high and the extra is not refunded. At a 5% return and a 28% PIR, tax takes about 1.4 percentage points a year.

What fees cost over 30 years

For $10,000 plus $500 a month for 30 years at a 6% return and a 28% PIR, this calculator projects $406,511 with no fees, $378,394 with a 0.5% annual fee and $352,483 with a 1% fee. A 1% fee takes about 13% of the final balance even though it looks small in any one year.

Employer contributions and ESCT

Employers must contribute at least 3.5% of gross pay from 1 April 2026, but Employer Superannuation Contribution Tax is deducted first. The ESCT rate is set by your salary plus the employer contributions: 10.5% up to $18,720, 17.5% to $64,200, 30% to $93,720, 33% to $216,000 and 39% above. On $60,000 a year a 3.5% employer contribution of $2,100 arrives as $1,732.50.

The government contribution

The government adds 25 cents for every dollar you contribute from July to June, up to $260.72 a year, so contributing $1,042.86 earns the full amount. Nothing is paid if your income is over $180,000. The calculator applies the 25-cent match and the income cap using the salary your contribution rate implies.

Term deposits and savings accounts

Ordinary bank interest is not PIE income. The bank deducts resident withholding tax at a rate based on your income, which can be up to 39%. Only PIE term deposits and PIE savings accounts are taxed at your PIR, so switch PIE tax off, or treat the result as optimistic, for an ordinary account.

Choosing a return assumption

The calculator does not know your fund's future return; the rate you enter drives everything. Conservative funds hold more cash and bonds and have historically returned less than growth funds, which carry more shares and larger falls along the way. Try a lower and a higher rate and plan around the range, not one number.
