Out of 45. Six subjects are each graded 1 to 7, giving a maximum of 42, and Theory of Knowledge plus the Extended Essay are scored together on the diploma points matrix for up to 3 more. Higher Level and Standard Level subjects are worth the same in the total — HL is harder and universities weight it in their offers, but a 6 counts as 6 either way.

They are scored as a pair, not individually, which is the part most people get wrong. Reading TOK grade first and EE second, the IB's matrix awards: 3 points for A/A, A/B and B/A; 2 for A/C, C/A, B/B, B/C, C/B, A/D and D/A; 1 for B/D, D/B and C/C; and 0 for C/D, D/C and D/D. A grade of E in either component is a failing condition and no diploma is awarded, whatever the subject total.

24 is the minimum, but points alone do not decide it. Alongside the total, the IB applies conditions on the shape of your results — a limit on how many grades of 2 and 3 you may have, a minimum across your Higher Level subjects, completion of CAS, and no E in TOK or the Extended Essay. This calculator checks the points total only; your school's IB coordinator can confirm the rest.

The global average total sits around 30, and roughly a third of candidates score 35 or above. For context on offers: 30 to 34 is a solid diploma that opens most universities, 35 to 38 is competitive at selective ones, and 39 and above is the range typical of offers from the most selective courses.

How does an IB score convert to a GPA?

There is no official conversion — the IB does not publish one, and every university that needs one sets its own table. The mapping in common use for a rough comparison is 7 = 4.0, 6 = 3.7, 5 = 3.3, 4 = 3.0, 3 = 2.0, 2 = 1.0 and 1 = 0.0, which is what this calculator applies, and it is why the GPA figure is labelled unofficial.
