Understanding Your US Taxes in 2026

The US uses a progressive tax system: higher income is taxed at higher marginal rates, but only the income within each bracket is taxed at that rate. A single filer with $80,000 in taxable income does not pay 22% on all $80,000 — they pay 10% on the first ~$11,925, 12% on the next portion, and 22% only on the top slice.

Effective vs marginal rate: Most people's effective (average) tax rate is substantially lower than their top marginal bracket. Our income tax calculator shows both figures so you understand your true tax burden.

For freelancers and 1099 workers: You owe both employee and employer FICA taxes (self-employment tax = 15.3% on net earnings), in addition to income tax. This often means 1099 workers owe 25–40% of net income in total federal taxes and should set aside money quarterly.

The 2026 federal income tax brackets for single filers are: 10% on income up to approximately $11,925; 12% up to $48,475; 22% up to $103,350; 24% up to $197,300; 32% up to $250,525; 35% up to $626,350; and 37% on income above $626,350. What is the 2026 standard deduction?

Tap to view the answer

For 2026, the standard deduction is $15,000 for single filers and $30,000 for married filing jointly. Taxpayers aged 65+ or blind receive an additional standard deduction amount. Choose between the standard deduction and itemized deductions — whichever is larger reduces your taxable income.

How much should I withhold from my paycheck in 2026?

Tap to view the answer

The goal is to withhold enough to avoid an underpayment penalty while not over-withholding and giving the IRS an interest-free loan. Use our W-4 calculator to find the right amount. As a rough check, multiply your expected annual income by your effective tax rate to get the target annual withholding.

Do I need to pay quarterly estimated taxes as a freelancer?

Tap to view the answer

If you expect to owe at least $1,000 in federal tax for the year (after withholding and credits), the IRS requires quarterly estimated payments. The safe harbor is 100% of last year's tax liability (110% if prior year AGI exceeded $150,000). Due dates: April 15, June 16, September 15, and January 15.
