Since 22 September 2025 (56th GST Council meeting), India mainly uses four slabs: 0% (exempt/nil-rated), 5% (merit rate), 18% (standard rate), and 40% (de-merit rate for luxury and sin goods). The earlier 12% and 28% slabs were largely folded into 5%/18% and 18%/40% respectively. A few items — gold, silver, precious stones (3%), rough diamonds (0.25%) — keep separate rates outside this structure.

Registration is mandatory once your aggregate annual turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods suppliers (₹20 lakh in a few special-category states) or ₹20 lakh for service providers (₹10 lakh in special-category states: Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura). Below the threshold, registration is optional but is needed if you want your buyers to claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) on your invoices.
