Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions to help you use this calculator confidently.

What deductions are taken from payroll in Canada?

Tap to view the answer

Federal income tax, provincial or territorial income tax, CPP contributions, and EI premiums are the mandatory ones. Many employees also have RRSP contributions, pension contributions, union dues, or taxable benefits factored into net pay.

How do CPP and EI affect take-home pay?

Tap to view the answer

Both are deducted from gross earnings each pay period, on top of income tax. CPP is 5.95% of pensionable earnings between the $3,500 exemption and the $74,600 YMPE for 2026; EI is 1.63% of insurable earnings up to $68,900. Once you hit the annual maximum, deductions stop for the rest of the year.

Does payroll tax calculation change by province?

Tap to view the answer

Yes. CPP and EI rules are federal and the same everywhere except Quebec (which uses QPP and a separate EI rate), but provincial income tax brackets and rates vary substantially — this calculator applies your selected province's 2026 rates.

What's the difference between gross pay and net pay?

Tap to view the answer

Gross pay is your salary or wages before any deductions. Net pay (take-home pay) is what you actually receive after income tax, CPP, EI, and any other payroll deductions are subtracted.

Is the result guaranteed to match my payslip?

Tap to view the answer

No — treat it as a planning estimate. Actual payroll depends on your employer's payroll system, your TD1 elections, year-to-date contribution amounts, and any employer-specific benefits or deductions this calculator doesn't know about.
