Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to common questions to help you use this calculator confidently.

What's the difference between eligible and non-eligible dividends?

Tap to view the answer

Eligible dividends come from large public corporations and get a higher gross-up (38%) and a larger federal tax credit (15.02% of the grossed-up amount). Non-eligible dividends are usually from private corporations that used the small business deduction, and get a smaller gross-up (15%) and credit (9.03%).

How does the dividend tax credit work in my province?

Tap to view the answer

Every province sets its own dividend tax credit rate, applied to the grossed-up dividend amount on top of the federal credit. The calculator uses your selected province to combine both into an accurate after-tax estimate.

Does the calculator model DRIP (dividend reinvestment)?

Tap to view the answer

Yes. With DRIP enabled and a projection period set, the calculator compounds reinvested dividends using your dividend yield and annual dividend growth rate to project future portfolio value and income.

Does this apply to dividends held in a TFSA or RRSP?

Tap to view the answer

Not directly — the dividend tax credit only applies to dividends in a non-registered (taxable) account. Dividends in a TFSA are tax-free; dividends in an RRSP aren't taxed until withdrawal, and withdrawals are taxed as ordinary income, not as dividends.

Why does my other income matter for dividend tax?

Tap to view the answer

Dividends are taxed at your marginal rate, which depends on your total income. Entering your other income (employment, self-employment, pension) lets the calculator place your grossed-up dividends in the correct tax bracket rather than assuming a flat rate.
