Paragraph Counter

Because the counter treats a blank line as the paragraph break, and your text almost certainly uses single line breaks instead. This is the single most common surprise with any paragraph counter. Word and Google Docs mark paragraphs with formatting rather than blank lines, so text that looks perfectly broken up on screen arrives here as one continuous block once the formatting is stripped. Adding an empty line between blocks fixes the count and does not change the meaning of the text.

For the web, two to four sentences — roughly 40 to 80 words — is the range most style guides land on, and single-sentence paragraphs are legitimate for emphasis. Academic and print writing runs considerably longer, commonly 100 to 200 words, because a reader working through a printed argument tolerates density that a reader scrolling a phone will not. The honest answer is that paragraph length is a function of medium, not a universal number, so check the requirement you are actually writing to.

At a typical academic paragraph length of 100 to 150 words, a 500-word essay is about four to six paragraphs — an introduction, two or three body paragraphs, and a conclusion. A 1,000-word essay is about seven to ten. A 2,000-word essay is about fourteen to twenty. These are structural estimates, not rules: a body paragraph should end where its idea ends, and hitting a paragraph target by splitting a single argument in half makes writing worse, not better.

Any block of text separated by a blank line counts as a paragraph, so a heading on its own line counts as one, and a bullet list separated by blank lines counts as several. A bullet list with no blank lines between items counts as a single paragraph. That means the count describes the block structure of your plain text rather than the semantics of a formatted document, which is exactly what you want when checking whether a draft is broken up enough — and not what you want if you are counting body paragraphs for a marking rubric.

Not as a ranking factor. Google has no paragraph-length signal, and no amount of restructuring will move a page on that basis alone. It matters indirectly and it matters quite a lot: dense blocks of text are abandoned faster on mobile, they make a page harder to skim for the passage that answers a query, and they reduce the chance of a paragraph being lifted into a featured snippet, where the useful range is roughly 40 to 60 words. Write for the reader; the crawl-side benefit follows from that.

Lines are counted at every line break; paragraphs are counted only at blank lines. Three paragraphs separated by blank lines produce five lines — three of text and two empty. The gap between the two numbers tells you something useful: if lines greatly exceed paragraphs, your text is broken with single line breaks and is not structured into paragraphs at all, which is normal for text pasted out of a PDF or an email client.
