Gross revenue

gross = units sold × selling price

Total sales value before any deduction.

After discount

after discount = gross − (gross × discount %)

The discount is applied to gross revenue.

Net revenue

net = after discount − (after discount × tax %)

Tax is charged on the discounted amount, not the original price.

Gross profit and margin

profit = net − (cost per unit × units);  margin % = profit ÷ net × 100

Profit after the direct cost of the units sold, as a share of net revenue.

Gross Revenue vs Net Revenue

Gross revenue (also called top-line or total sales) is units sold multiplied by the selling price per unit — before any deductions. Net revenue subtracts discounts, returns, and taxes from gross revenue. The difference matters: a company can have high gross revenue but low net revenue if discounts are deep or tax rates are high. Financial statements report net revenue, not gross revenue.

The Discount Impact on Profit

A common pricing mistake: assuming a 10% discount only costs 10% of profit. If your profit margin is 30%, a 10% price cut requires a 50% increase in unit sales just to maintain the same total profit. The calculator lets you model discount scenarios and see the real impact on your bottom line before committing to a sale or promotion.
