Frequently Asked Questions

What is the tax-free threshold in Australia for 2026-27?

The tax-free threshold is $18,200 per year. You don't need to pay income tax if your income is below this. However, you may still need to file a tax return depending on your circumstances (e.g., if you're entitled to a refund).

How much superannuation do employers have to contribute?

The Superannuation Guarantee rate is 12% of your ordinary time earnings. It rose half a point a year from 2021-22 and reached its legislated final rate of 12% on 1 July 2025, so it is 12% for 2025-26 and 2026-27. Employers pay it into your fund on top of your salary.

How is Medicare levy calculated?

The Medicare levy is 2% of your taxable income and applies to most Australian residents at every income level. It is nil if your taxable income is at or below $28,011 (singles) and shaded in between $28,011 and $35,013, where it is capped at 10 cents per dollar above the threshold rather than the full 2%. Higher thresholds apply to families and to seniors and pensioners. Do not confuse it with the Medicare Levy Surcharge, which is a separate 1% to 1.5% charge on high earners who do not hold private hospital cover.

What is the HECS-HELP repayment threshold?

Compulsory repayments start once your repayment income passes $69,528 for 2026-27. Since 1 July 2025 repayment has been marginal: you repay 15 cents in the dollar on income above the threshold and 17 cents on income above $129,717, so only the income above the threshold counts. The old system — a flat percentage of your whole income the moment you crossed a threshold — was abolished.

Can I claim deductions for working from home?

Yes. The ATO provides two methods: $0.80 per hour (simplified) or work-related expenses (detailed). You can claim expenses like home office rent, utilities, depreciation on equipment, phone, and internet.
